There are high speed drifts and then there is drifting for style.
When the drift king first started drifting he was actually racing in autocross or another type of race. He actually won every race in a season by drifting.
Now I don't know if he was just that much faster on the straight aways of if the drifting was the cause for him to pull to the front of the pack each time.
I doubt that his car was that much faster than all the others.
As for the original question I think that high speed drifting in races through certain corners is still racing but, as for events like D1 they are more like motorsports.
Can you imagine if there was a whole group of cars in a race all drifting and one spins out how many car it would take out that weren't able to change they're trajectory(sp) in time. Would be fun to watch though
