1987 passenger 4x4 front axle

I just replaced the passenger axle with one out of another front end I have. Upon reinstall, the axle will not come far enough forward to get retainer clip on. I cannot even see the grove. Axle bottoms out. Manual hubs. Any clues?

v6 and 4cyl are different.
