just tried out the 4x4

i have an 05 nismo frontier 4x4. decided to try the 4hi out. when got to the end of a trail, pretty muddy and a good bit of water, there was a bit of an area to turn around in. i realize that the turning radius is reduced when in 4-wheel drive but i noticed a great bit of poping as i turned the wheel and made any forward or backward movements. i am sure i was only slightly turning the wheel and still the same poping. anyone else notice this on their 05 frontier while off-road or in 4hi.

i also have a 4x4 86.5 v6 pathfinder and never ran into this problem. even after i switched out to the manual locking warn hubs.

I've got the same truck and have never heard any popping noises, even in 4LO. I'd make an appointment and have that checked out, after all, thats what the warrenties are for. Good luck ,hope it's something minor.

Was it just the normal driveline tention? All vehicles with a basic 4wd system generate foces between the axles when they're in 4wd and turning at the same time. This tension is reseased by the wheels slipping, which often feels like the truck poping and eveng almost hopping at each wheel that slips if the level of traction is high enough. But these genenerally have very specific feel and sound. I'd have the dealer let you test drive a different truck in 4wd to see if the sounds are similar. Just put another truck in 4wd and do a U turn on asphalt, you'll hear what I mean. Better yet, have them show you this if they say the sounds are totally normal. Make 'em prove it to you by showing you in a different truck.
Good luck.

More than likely it is your cv joints. Check the cv boots up front for tears.
