how 'bout a basic tune up? bad plug wire? look at maintenance 1st, you just bought the truck, they guy beat on it find out how he maintained it. alot of people drive til there dead and a tune up would of kept them going. after that look to see if there are any stored TCs.

haha....yeah, I got to thinking about that after I posted. I really haven't looked very closely at the engine. I replaced a couple of belts the other day and was looking around, stood there scratching my head trying to figure out why there were so many damn plug wires on a little 4 cyl. I counted 8 plug wires and 2 coil wires, what's up with that? Every other engine I've come across was one plug per cylinder.....I know this isn't V8, but that's how the plugs look like they are set up.
Plus this thing has a carb on it, can I take that off and clean it the same as a throttle body on a fuel injected application? I know squat about carbs.....
you have the Z motor, 4 intake and 4 exhaust spark plugs, intake 1 side exhaust the other. i had an 86D20 king cab with it, tough little motor. don't remember too much about it though i sold in 89 (old timers disease). check your wires using a fine mist from the garden hose on 1 wire at a time, when the idle gets rougher, bad wire/boot. pick up a tech manual so you know all your specs for the engine. gap timing things like that. don't remember how to pull codes i think you needed to jumper something not sure. i do remember the CEL came on at either 30 or 60k intervals for basic service.
Yeah the intake has Z24 printed on it. If I get time this weekend I'll see about doing a little maintanance on it....I'm sure it needs it. I'll see if I can pick up a Hayne's manual for it also. Maybe that will answer some of my questions
Gotcha
I was piddling around under the hood last night (found an idler pulley with no nut holding it on and a couple bolts that had worked their way almost all the way out) and saw a few houses that were almost all the way off their nipples, so I pushed them back on.
I'll check them all real well this weekend for leaks/cracks and what not.
