88 4X4 Trannie Problem

I have an 88 nissan 4x4 with an auto trannie, and its working like ^*$&^, Heres what it does, sometimes it works great, and the next time it wont downshift or start out in low gear when starting out, it has a "power shift" button on the shifter to bypass the overdrive, when i start out from a stop it will start out in drive, and wont shift into low. and when it gets up to speed it wont shift into Overdrive, and when i let off the gas it feel just like you pushed a clutch in. rev it up and it kicks back into drive, its killing my gas mileage, The problem seems to be electrical, because if i turn the key off and turn it back on it seems to correct it, at least for the next mile then it goes back into its fits. i honestly dont think its the trannie itself, but more like something that controls it. even when i press the Power button it still wont downshift, but the next time i restart it, it works fine for awile,
any suggestions????

First things first. Check the fluid level per the manuals instructions. Follow them EXACTLY. Being low or high by even a half pint, thats 8 ounces, or 1 cup, can screw up the performance. Now this may not be all that sensitive of a tranny, but some really are that precise. also, Try changing the fluid and filter. I've had very good luck with this in the past. It's a pretty crappy job though, so see if there's a simple electronic fix, but don't hesitate too much. it rarely hurts to change the fluid and filter.
Good luck
