Hell, even I only spent $200 on my engine. Of course I have spent over $800 in parts and machine work to get my turbo Grand Am back on the road. It'll probably be more like $1500 before I'm done.
If I had the cash on hand I'd snap one of those engines up right now. Even if I couldn't get to the project for a good long time I know a CA18DET may never be had again for that price.
Besides, I just go a line on a complete light oak king size bedroom set, like new, for $700. Guy payed over $2,500 for it new. He's getting courts martialled

and needs the cash.
