For all you thinking of doing the same - DONT. Pulled it, and started the car (after re-assembly, of course) and it jumped a cog. The car wont run now. DAMIT, I find everything out the hard way. By the way, even with the guide off, it still clatters.
Anyway, for my current problem. How do I fix the timing jump?!

That really sucks. But here's the thing. It'n not the chain guide! Why would it be. It's supposed to be there and it doesn't move. So obviously it's something that's causing slack in the chain. ie oil pressure. Does your motor just turn and not start? You probably need to find TDC and re time your motor if you didn't screw something else up.
