Dunno why your friend said what he said, but to reset the ECU, take off both terminals on the battery. Give it 10 minutes and then put the terminals back on the battery.

The ECU takes time to learn to newer surroundings, and it may need that with more airflow than the stock airbox. However, this doesn't call for resetting the ECU. Do it anyways if it pleases you to do so.

PS, this friend of yours, does he have an SE-R to back this up, or any experience with Nissan cars? Just wondering.
