Question Uhh...brake lights??

I have a 1983 280zx and when I turn off the car.. my brake lights stay on... I had to just unplug them but why do they stay on. I cant figure it out. I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Sounds like your light relay got stuck. I don't have a 280 so I can't tell you where the relay is located.

Sometimes all it takes is a tap of the relay and it becomes unstuck.

I had this exact problem on my 240SX. I giving you info based on my 240 , should be similar. There is a little button that presses in on your brake switch that can get worn and fall out and the brake lights will stay on since the switch isn't being pressed while your foot isn't on the brake. At dealership the button is like 2- 3 dollars. it's kind of hard to put in. You have to manuver under the pedals and use needle nose pliers and something to poke it in, like a screwdriver.

I'm with brentonium, it'll be the plastic button, they always die and fall out, if you look carefully on the floor you will find the remnants.....

Depending on the mounting, sometimes the brake light switch can pop out of this mount and the brake lights will stay on that way also. Also, I beleive with some cars there is a spring on the brake pedal which aids return, if this spring is broken or loose from its mount, the pedal droops a bit and may cause the same problem. You may also just have a bad switch, condensation can get in there and corrode the insides. All are possibilities.

Replacing these electrical brake components is pretty cheap. Switch is like $6, Button plug thing is like one - 3 dollars
