I was gonna paint my 280ZX...but how would I make this work?

I had an idea to paint my 280 silver, but recently I like the idea of just shooting it with a few good coats of grey primer, and black primer for the hood bulge. I think it'd look great with those smoked headlight lenses from Motorsport Auto and I'd probably smoke the tailight lenses and lower it and add some 16" wheels with black spokes and a polished lip. My question, are there any issues with leaving a car JUST primered, rather than painting it? If so, how could they be resolved? Thanks

True primer will not prevent rust. Over time the rainwater will penetrate the primer. I'm sure you've seen a car that had been repaired and primered in spots but had never been painted and in the middle of the primer there was red surface rust. yep!

I good paint shop can give you the same look with a real paint job that protects you car. They can shoot the paint dry and get the same effect.

Well, the thing is, the motor is gonna come first with this car, so the paint's gonna have to wait. I expect to dump a good $600-$800 in the top end alone, and was gonna paint it myself. The thing is, I figured for right now, the primer would be okay until I could save up enough to acctually paint the turd. Thanks for all the input everyone.
