resonator on the intake

is the resonator on the intake really needed? there is one vaccume tube going to it and i was thinking about removing it and capping the intake pipe and pinching the vac. tube. if i did this would it affect my emissions/fuel economy?

also, i notice that the resonator is after the filter and on other cars its before it, does anyone actually know why this is?
