I would personally stick with the SR20DET conversion. Engines such as the RB25DET and the RB26DETT can fit, but it definitely won't be a bolt on affair (I'm not sure about the earlier engines eg. RB20). Since you are from the US, those engines will cost you an arm and a leg. In addition, I doubt there will be many people with the experience of doing those conversions! But be warned, a S15 SR20DET and tranny is not cheap either! I'm not sure how much they are in the US, but in Australia there are still very expensive even though we have the S15 here!
I would personally do the SR20DET conversion. See if you can get the engine from a late model S14 and keep the standard transmission. Spend the rest of your money on doing up the engine.
