Alternator substitution, '92 Max on 2000 Max

Hi. 2000 Maxima, 66K miles: Have an intermittent charging condition. Started today after WOT to redline (auto trans). Battery light came on, as did dim brake light (proper for alternator failure). Got home after 1/2 hour with battery voltage down to 11.7V. 80A fuses and 120A fuse were fine. Charged battery. Started engine. No battery light on. Drove at WOT, 1-2 and 2-3 shifts a few times, and saw the battery light flicker once. So, it appears that the alternator is intermittent.

From what I've read, the internal voltage regulator is probably not the problem as it will not illuminate the battery light. I'll remove the alternator and check for bad solder joints on diodes, stator connections, brush holders and such. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

However, I do have a spare alternator from a former '92 SOHC Maxima. I'd like to use it if possible. Mounting considerations are the major considerations. If the B and S connector(s) are different I'll do an adaptation. Again, any information would be appreciated.

Please PM me and if possible, please copy to berniek@technicaldevelop.com.

Thanks. Really appreciate this forum.
