What's up...
I've been having similar problems as far as the car driving fine for awhile and then all of the sudden not wanting to downshift. What i did was remove the transmission and replace the clutch and cable(since the unstreetable six puck disc and heavy duty pressure plate needed to go). I went to schucks and got a stock replacement kit(fenco brand), put it in and everything was fine...for about two days, and all of the sudden it started doing it again. I knew that the se-r has it's tranny trouble spots, but almost always it's either fifth gear popout or third gear round off, so i was trying to diagnose the problem and ended up throwing my arms up and for the first time in over ten years took the car to ammco to get an opinion on the problem. well about an hour after i dropped the car off they called me up telling me that my brand new clutch disc had broken(one of the springs had popped out and was wedging itself between the disc and pressure plate). So, they gave me the clutch kit which i exchanged for a new one and unfortunately, had to pay them to install it. Everything went great...for about a week, and then driving down the freeway to work i went to downshift from fifth to fourth and to my surprise and dismay, no dice.I hobbled the car home after work and this weekend took it apart again to find yet another broken clutch disc(broken at the exact same spot).I spent this last weekend trying to diagnose what the reason behind this is and ended up with the fact that i am buying ultra cheap crappy parts.
I also noticed a deep wear spot on the inner bellhousing where the diff sits due to the pressure plate rubbing on it. I've ordered a factory clutch and will install it this weekend. Sorry for the ultra long reply but if your still having troubles pull off the tranny and inspect the clutch itself, it could be the problem.
