Ignition Coil Problems

This is a 2001 Sentra with 180K miles, never serviced for ECM foam or Crank Position Sensor recall. Currently getting a code for engine misfire.

Spark plug number 1 shows no sign of fireing. Replaced igntion coil and car ran fine for about 1 hr before problem returned. The replacement igntion coil was overheating and was literally fried.

Took car to dealer for two recalls and a diagnostic check of the igntion coil. The dealer claims the ECM is bad and cannot diagnose the problem or complete the recall without replacing the ECM and coil.

Can a faulty ECM be responsible for the coil failures and how can I troubleshoot the situation to verify?

Thanks.
