My 93 Sentra GA16DE makes engine knock/pinging if the adjustment is set to 10. 6 or 5 works better reducing the engine knock a lot.

A technician also suggested me cleaning the EGR valves will help and my car is close to 155,000 miles. He also suggested that eventually, the cylinder head must be removed for a more complete cleaning procedure as well as some corrections.

I think that I will wait the maximum amount of time before going for the cylinder head removal, even I can still wait for the EGR cleaning. I don't know if after all this years, the cleaning of the EGR valves will be that effective.

Because my car's computer has never make the check engine light turn on while driving, the tech. told me not to worry about it yet, but I am aware that my car has mileage.

If I have to remove the cylinder head, I will take the opportunity to probably remove all the valves, seats, lifters, springs and replace them all, even the chain because I will be already there. By the time this happens, I will try also a few mods Nissan employs in current models like the Molybdenum coating for the pistons, and maybe those new pistons Nissan use in the new 2000-03 Sentra which are less prone to engine knock. An effective coating for the pistons is excellent against excessive heat too and there are places that can do the job in the U.S.

That is, if I decide to keep the car for many years more. I will not pay a huge amount of money for a car someone else might enjoy instead of me.

Thanks.
