Yea, I took a look under my car while on a lift today at work and I see what you're talking about. Looks like nissan designers took a trip the the garbage can and picked that up and walked it over to manufacturing for casting. Honestly, it looks like that 'axle' took about a good 30...maybe 40 seconds to design.
