It's built into the transmission to not shift until the tranny is up to a certain temperature, so that it won't damage it. There isn't really anything that I know of that you can do for it. I also have an 86 and sometimes when the temps dip into the teens and twenties it will take it 8 to 10 miles to switch into overdrive. It's just one of those things you have to learn to live with.
