Yes, synthetic is fine to add to unknown fluid. It usually tells you on the bottle if there are any compatibility issues. HERE is some good info on brake fluid. I use DOT5.1 in one of my cars and one of the most noticeable differences is the fluid does not get burned and turn black like lesser grades. Also no issues with vapor lock.
