Really don't know, but I do know that if a engine redlines at 6000RPM, and you downshift at high speed, high enough to cause the engine to turn, say, 8000RPM, then you #1-No longer have an engine #2-Don't know how to drive, because #3-you are not very smart.
I'm sure your friend was racing when he blew his motors, explaining why he downshifted, and he probably wasn't familiar with the performance of his motor. I know at what RPM my engine runs ant what speed and in what gear, so if I do decide to downshift, I know what gear I can safely go into by what speed I am going.
