torsion bar adjustment

hey guys i've been doing quite a bit or research on cheap and easy ways of lifting my 1993 2wd pickup a couple of inches (1.5-2 inches). i've read alot about adjusting the torsion bars , basicly i'm looking for the reasons why i shouldn't do it and how much lift i can get out of it safely without hurting anything. for the back what would be better, shackles or add-a-leaf type thing? thanks guys
