Starting in 2001 thru 2004, Nissan used the 3.5L VQ engine from the Maxima, tweaked for the truck. The engine wasn't new, but the application was.
You'd think the VQ wouldn't have all these issues, since it had been in the Maxima for a while (how long, I don't know, I'm not up on that history). But it seems to be well documented from what I'm reading on various forums-- O2 sensors, coil failures, timing sensors--- are failing pretty high on this generation Pathfinder.
Course, I didn't find all that info till after it started happening to me personally, and I researched it.
The venerable 3.3 VG had it's own issues-- exhaust manifold being one, but that was covered under an extended Nissan warranty up to 10 yrs/100K if you were lucky. My 97 had it happen.
