Usually occurs when I breke or when I take my foot off the gas pedal suddenly. Fairly loud. (I venture to guess it's due to the momentum of the car).

This sound also shows up when I go through ruts and holes ont he road, even if I slowed down.

What are the usual culprits? Are these brake issues or metal to metal contact issues?

The spare tire and all that goes along with it sit in a styrofoam tray under the floor. Thay might be what is making your noise. You may want to remove it and see if the sound goes away.
