Fuel pump issue

We may recall I rebuilt and replaced the Z-24i engine my truck. I haven't been getting any gas to the TBI. I tested the wiring according to the FSM and everything seems be OK. Yesterday I pulled the fuel pump. Parts of it are pretty rusted. I removed the pump from the assembly and connected it to a battery charger set on low. I got no noise or pumping action. I assume this means the pump is bad. Everybody agree? I tried to disassemble it further to check the pump, but can't get into it other than pulling off the bottom plastic part that has the filter. There appears to be gummy rusty crud in a small inlet.

What is the best solution? I've heard the dealer now only carries the whole assembly, not just the pump. I imagine it is over $300. I've seen replacement aftermarket pumps available for around $180-220, but question whether they are an exact fit. Any advice is appreciated.
