True you couldnt get it in gear if the vehicle was running.
Verify that it is in gear by placing it in first and/or reverse & see if it can be pushed (two person job to avoid injury). The engine will attempt to turn over if it is in gear. So make sure the key is in the off position.
BTW what you describe sound like the "disk hub" has broken off and is no longer connected to the tranny.
