Hello everyone, this is my first thread, I have a few questions. I have a 2000 pathfinder with 130000km, does this vehicle have a timing chain or belt?, when should I change it?, can I do it myself? any help would be great thanks

Im not sure what 130000km is in miles so I cant tell you if it needs to be changed. I know that mine had to be changed at 105000miles and thats on a 1990. If your not very experienced with working on cars then I recommend that you do not do this yourself. For an beginner (if you are one) this can be a tricky job. Unfortunately, getting this done at a shop can be expensive. If you do decide to do this yourself I highly recommend you do not do this without buying a repair manuel. I use the chilton repair manuel. Good luck and be careful (this is not a job you want to quit half way through)!! :) .

Most definitely time to change.

It's a type of job that should be done by a person who completely understands how the engine works. It can be a very expensive fix if the swap is not done right.

I priced a timing belt job at 2 dealerships and the quotes were a little over $1000. But that includes a lot of items on top of the timing belt that should be changed while you are in there, thermostat, coolant hoses, tensioner, water pump, cam/crank seals, drive belts. Did it myself for around $250 in parts.

It isn't a tough job, just takes time. But you need to keep the risks in mind, if you get the timing belt off a notch (very easy to do) you'll be doing it all over again. Worst case you mess up something and the timing belt breaks you'll be shopping for a new engine.

If you want to try it do not try it without the Nissan service manual steps, I know the Haynes has some mistakes (wrong size feeler gauge when setting final tension).

Here's a few pics to give you an idea of what you'll be getting into:
