4WD torsion spring rates

Hi all,

Several years ago I bought a 96 4X4 with low miles and bad tranny. I finally got the trans rebuilt and installed. I was about to install the torsion bars when I decided to check the markings at the ends of the bars. One is marked R and 188, and the other marked R and 216. It is clear that the PO had at least one of the bars off since there is one new dust boot while the other three are old and cracked. [I think the tranny was removed and put back as well.] So:

1) Do the numbers refer to spring rates? If not, what do they mean?

2) I could not find any writing along the shaft; only at the ends. I assume I should have an L and an R, not two R's, right?

Thanks

According to my 2003 Frontier service manual, the rear end of each torsion bar should have either the letter "L" or "R" (for left or right) and an arrow indicating turning direction. You might want to download a 96 service manual and check in the front suspension chapter and see what it says, in case the Hardbody is different. Nico Club's site has manuals available.

Thanks. I had originally looked at both ends of one bar but only one end of the other. Of course the L was where I didn't look. So the back end of the bars are indeed marked L and R. But, that still means there is an R and a number at the front end of BOTH bars. I suspected it might be a spring rate spec. But probably more like a mfr date or something. And I did find and download the entire 1996 manual. Very cool we have access to these. Several years ago I had to cough up $90 for a factory manual for a car as there was no Haynes or Chilton manual for it.

Thanks for the help!
