I changed my front disc brake pads today. The old pads on the left side were less worn out than the right side pads. I also had hard time pushing back the left piston into the caliper with a C-clamp. Right side piston was easier to push back with the C-clamp. After replacing the pads I still have to press the brake pedal hard to stop the car as if the pads were old. What is causing this? Do I have air in the left side brake line or is it a bad piston?
Thanks for your comment. Is there quick and easy way to clean the rust from the piston without a complete overhaul? I watched a few videos on youtube and it seems like a difficult task to replace the dust cover boot seal.
Just replace the caliper, they're like $50 with a $30 core charge. It's more trouble than it's worth to replace the square cut seal. Be careful if it comes with a bracket. My 200sx needed a caliper and the bracket I got was the wrong size so it made this awful grinding.
Someone told me it could be as simple as air in the brake line. I'm going to bleed the front 2 wheel brake lines only. Can air bubbles travel through the braking system and go from back wheel caliper to front wheel caliper and vice versa?
Why would you do that ? You are just asking for problems. Usually you do the back ones first, starting with the one furthest from the master cylinder. You should probably track down the service manual for your model, and read the brake section.
I bled all 4 brakes yesterday, starting with the back wheels. This is my first time bleeding brakes. I learned a lot. I was opening and closing the bleeding valve with some force and the valve itself was introducing air bubbles to the system. The never-ending mini bubbles coming through the plastic tube was driving me crazy. After wasting a lot of fresh brake fluid, I Googled it and figured out what I was doing wrong. BTW, I had a helper who was pumping the brake while I was opening and closing the bleeding valve too forcefully. I then opened the valve only slightly and very slowly and the mini bubbles were gone.
None of the videos I watched before mentioned this self-inducing, never-ending mini bubble syndrome.
The brakes are stiff and a lot more responsive now. Bleeding helped. Thanks for your help and support.
