Not much of a mechanic so please be elementary with me... The overheating happens sporadically and suddenly. Sometimes when slowing to a stop... Sometimes at idle. (Does seem to do it more at lower RPMs). When it happens the temp hand suddenly jumps from normal to hot... it isn't a slow or gradual move.. the hand is holding steady then suddenly jumps up. After shutting the engine off a gurgling sound can be heard and the overflow reservoir is completely full to overflowing. After the engine cools down to normal level (about 20 minutes) the coolant will suddenly drain from the reservoir as if a plug was pulled somewhere... The engine can then be restarted and the temp will hold at normal for a period of time... Another clue: When the temp hand jumps up and quick spike in the rpms will cause it to stop climbing and drop back to normal, but only for a few seconds before it jumps back up again... Had a friend check the temps of the hoses and radiator while it was running hot.. We found no real discernible differences in temp between the components (around 170°). The radiator felt relatively cool to the touch.... The radiator was replaced about a year ago. I had the thermostat replaced about 2 months ago. The water pump was replaced about 2 years ago. Put a new radiator cap on about 1 month ago. Nothing seems to help... The sporadic and sudden nature of the issue makes it hard to diagnose...
