no heat

My daughter has a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE with the ga16de.1.6L engine. I realize its August but she turned on the defrost the other day and no heat came out. I have tried all I can think of such as: changed the thermostat, temp sensor and flushed the radiator and even disconnected the heater hoses to the heater coil and flushed out the coil and checked the heater hoses for any obstructions but found none. What else can I look at or test? It doesn't seem to have a heater control valve at least not the I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had this issue with a Ford, defrost went on and then bam, no heat, blew fuse, replaced, no heat. Did everything you did. I caved and took it in because I was stuck. The guy said that it could be the blender door, could have broken off. It was going to take $400-500 to just to see if that was it. I wasn't going to pay it so I never really found out, it wasn't worth more than that. We sold the car as is, and got some cash for it. My guess is that it's the blender door. That would include dash removal and investigation.

I have a porsche 944 that did this. Everything seemed to work fine but it was dead of winter and it would never blow hot air? well your heater core is the highest point of you cooling system so if it is low on coolant it won't blow hot air. I know its simple but that was my issue.

Just a thought here... I have a "98 with the same engine. Last fall I had a similar problem but I had some heat just not enough. I replaced the thermostat with an aftermarket NAPA one and it seemed to cure my problem. I seem to recall that the factory thermostat had a little "Jiggle" bleeder valve on it that had to be in the up position. The NAPA one did not have this little "jiggle" thingy. Nonetheless the thermostat replacement seemed to do the trick.

I would make certain that you don't have an air lock. To bleed the air out I've found that jacking up the front of the car with the radiator cap off seems to help. I think there is a bleeder valve on this engine that needs to be cracked open to let out the air bubbles. I could be confusing this car with my Nissan Truck (I know my truck has a bleeder valve, just not certain about the Sentra).

If the thermostat is stuck open it would not allow the engine to heat up enough. I believe that was my problem last fall.

Good luck!

Yardbird,

Well I'm glad you got it figured out. Today I figured out why my '98 Sentra 1.6 L GXE has been making a whistling noise or I guess a howling noise.... My factory water pump bearing is shot. 138K miles. I guess that's not bad to go that long before replacing! I did not seem to be losing any coolant and did not notice any coolant seeping through the weep hole. After the belt was off I spun the pulley and it was obvious the noise it made.

I spent the better part of 6 hrs tearing the water pump out, it is really hard to get the thermostat housing bolts (3-10mm) out. But after removing the engine support bracket bolts (3-14mm) I managed to gain some extra working room. I thought I would have to remove the power steering pump in order to get the thermostat housing loose. I was able to remove the two bolts (10mm & 12mm) from the power steering belt adjuster bracket. Once the two bolts are removed and the belt is removed the adjuster bracket can fall down out of the way to gain a bit more hand room. I used a variety of 1/4" drive extensions to remove the three thermostat housing bolts. I did no t remove the thermostat water outlet bolts (where the thermostat is contained). Also did not remove any hoses except for the small U shaped one that can be removed easy from the top side of the engine, (this hose was blocking the top two thermostat to water pump mounting bolts). Just separated the thermostat housing bolts where they attach directly to the water pump. Once I had the bolts out I was able to remove it by tapping on the thermostat housing using a long 1/2" drive extension and hammer. The pump removal was relatively easy after this. Installed the new water pump, belts, and new idler pulley while at it. Car is much quieter now! Hoping for another 100K miles!!
