hi all,
my CV boots (front both left and right nissan sentra 93) got cut and i didn't realise that. now i am supposed to change the driveshafts itself cause nobody will replace the boots now as they say its not advisable.. but this happened five months back and i have been driving the car since then without changing the shaft.. i am waiting for that clicking sound to start coming while taking a turn, because that is when people say that drive shafts are close to dying.. i have some questions regarding this
1) is it safe to assume that till the clicking sound starts coming while turning it won't break down while driving
2) Am i causing any further damage to some other thing and may end up paying even more than right now
3)how much does it take to get the both left and right shafts changed
apart from a decrease in mileage there is no other difference in performance.
thank u all

Had the same problem on mine. Ran me about $600 to have them both done. Would've done it myself but don't have all the pullers and a press to reassemble. I'd do it as soon as fiscally possible but I ran mine for a few months before the work was done.

Unclepink, I'd drive on them until they click, CV joints are so strong I'd it'd take large rocks stuck in it for it to totally go out. I wouldn't bother with replacing boots since they're usually not as thick as OEM boots, which are prone to tearing in the first place, it's more work and won't save you much of anything moneywise.
Lifetime shafts can be bought for $60 or less at local parts stores and they're easy to do. You don't need a press, pullers or any clamps for that matter to do them. I've done them on my "93 XE as well as my '93 SE-R. The SE-R is tougher because of a support bearing on the shaft that makes putting that shaft back in somewhat difficult. To get the shafts out, either pull eht spindle off of the strut or pull it out of the lower ball joint, both ways are relatively easy, and doing both would make it even easier. Your brake line is the biggest obstacle IMO. I've never tried taking the tie rod off but I bet that's one of the quickest and easiest ways, I'll try that next time I have to do them.
